With the release of “Godzilla” in 2014, Legendary Pictures launched their shared universe of giant monster movies. They continued this universe’s story with “Kong: Skull Island” and will continue this with “Godzilla: King of the Monsters”, followed by “Godzilla vs. Kong”. This kaiju fan couldn’t be happier. But with any shared universe, there are aspects of lore and characters (or in this case, giant monsters) that any fan would love to see. Here is the list of the 5 monsters this kaiju enthusiast would love to see:
*Being as Rodan, Mothra, and Ghidorah are confirmed for the Godzilla sequel, they will not be on this list.
The giant beetle guardian of Atlantis has only appeared in one movie, but made a huge impact on fans with his power-set and character design alone! Megalon has a place in the newer Legendary films for his uniqueness alone. Also, introducing him as a prehistoric insectoid “MUTO” makes his explanation into the movies much easier, than say, our next entry.
This alien cyborg was the first monster to make Godzilla bleed. Nuff said. Gigan’s design is, for lack of a better word, strange. Giant hooks for hands and feet, a buzz saw on his torso, and a single red eye across his face. Gigan’s unique design would look amazing with the updated visuals and aesthetic of the new Monster-Verse. His fighting style would also provide Godzilla a fight that cannot be matched by any other monster! Flying buzz saw attacks, laser beams from his eye, and the use of his razor sharp hook arms are something that only Gigan could bring, and it would be incredibly exciting for audiences.
Anguirus is a character who is deserving of any fan’s respect. Not only for being the first adversary Godzilla ever fought, but for helping introduce the concept of giant monster battles. He is also one of Godzilla’s most trusted allies. The partnership between Anguirus and Godzilla brings about countless opportunities for multi-monster clashes. Also, his prehistoric-like design makes for an easier explanation of his appearance on Earth. This fan favorite monster needs to be brought into the Monster-Verse!
Arguably the most popular of Godzilla’s villains, Mechagodzilla is an example of simplistic brilliance. Want an interesting villain for the hero to fight? Make a robot version of him/her. Mechagodzilla has been presented as both the villain and hero of mankind. For the legendary version of the mechanized kaiju, I would recommend the version mankind built to defend itself from other giant monsters. It opens the cinematic universe to stories of man fighting back from the inevitable threat of other “MUTOs”. Plus, oh goodness would a modern day rematch between the King of Monsters and the Robotic Titan from Hollywood be something to witness!!
This one would be the hardest, yet, if done right, be the most gratifying entry into the Monster-Verse we’ve ever had. Gamera belongs to DISAY studios as opposed to TOHO, so Gamera was never able to cross over into Godzilla or King Kong’s (when TOHO made movies starring the ape). However, if the latest trilogy of Gamera is any indicator, the titanic turtle can hold his own in a modern retelling. Also, as a heroic monster, he could have his own stand alone movies with his own villains, such as Gaos, Legion, Jigar, or Iris. And I guarantee, if he met Godzilla for a giant reptile rumble, any kaiju fan would lose their mind!!! This is a character who deserves love and attention from Legendary if we were lucky enough for all the stars to allign.
There are many monsters that deserve spots on this list and hopefully, if Legendary continues making Monster-Verse movies, we will see them all!! If we are lucky enough, we will see them all at one time in an Avengers-like Destroy All Monsters film!!
