A TON of MCU movie news was dropped at San Diego Comic Con this year from trailers, to posters, to concept art, and plot details to upcoming movies! One of those movies, coming in 2019, is non other than Captain Marvel herself. Captain Marvel will take place in the 1990s and will see the Captain fighting the Skrulls (whom we will have another “Who Is” article on, don’t you worry). Many characters have taken up the mantle of Captain Marvel. The Captain Marvel we will see in the film will be Carol Danvers, thus, we will focus on her.
Carol Danvers has a very unique history in Marvel comics. Danvers was born to be in the air, as she held positions as both a Colonel in the United States Air Force and a security captain for NASA. While working for NASA, she was tied into the schemes of the Kree Empire, where she met Mar Vell, a Kree soldier under the name Captain Marvel. During a battle between Mar Vell and Yon-Rogg, whom had kidnapped her, she was pushed into a Kree “Psyche-Magnitron”. This device made her a half-Kree Superhuman. After this transformation, she took on the Superhero identity of Ms. Marvel.
These powers include (inhales deeply):
– Super Strength
– Super Speed
– Super Reflexes
– Super Durability
– Super Agility
– Super Stamina
– Photonic Blasts
– Energy Absorption
– Regenerative Healing
– And Immunity to toxins and poisons.
On top of her super-powered abilities, she is also an expert combatant and pilot thanks to her days in the Air Force. She also has experience as a spy and is fluent in multiple languages, some of which are alien. Using these abilities she protects Earth, as well as tackling threats across the galaxy. Carol didn’t take up the mantle of Captain Marvel until much later, however.
When Carol received knowledge of the Phoenix Force making its way to Earth, she set up a team to stop it, no matter the costs. This team included Mar Vell, Vision, and others. During the fight with the Phoenix Force, Mar Vell ends up sacrificing his life to redirect the Force from the planet Hala. The mission ended in failure as the Phoenix force makes its way to Earth, resulting in the “Avengers Vs. X-men” story event. At the end of this story, Carol takes on the mantle of her fallen friend, Mar Vell, and becomes the new Captain Marvel.
Though only taking the name of Captain Marvel 5 years ago, she has sky rocketed into popularity, making her way in to key roles in story arcs such as “Civil War 2” and TV shows such as “Avengers: Secret Wars”. She will star in her own self-titled movie in 2019. This movie takes place in the 1990s and will feature Nick Fury as a supporting character. This movie will no doubt show us one of, if not, the most powerful hero in the MCU.
