Welcome to the “Who Is” series! If we’re going to be honest, there are a LOT of comic book characters out there. Most people can’t be expected to know every character in the Marvel or DC roster, but that’s where Adventurers Anonymous is here to help! With the “Who Is” series, we hope to give you information on the background of various comic book characters that aren’t as well known as Batman or Captain America. If you’re interested in learning about a new character, send us suggestions of who you’d like us to cover! So let’s get to it!
Disney’s annual D23 Expo was this past weekend, and that expo brought with it a ton of awesome movie news for fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. On the first day of the event, 4 mysterious figures shrouded in a black cloth were displayed at the Marvel Cinematic booth. This caused massive speculation of what those figures might be, but on Saturday, July 15th it was finally revealed: Thanos’ Black Order will be fighting the Avengers in 2018. However, many moviegoers were left scratching their heads. Who is The Black Order? No worries adventurers, we’ve got your back!
The Black Order is a relatively new team that consists of 5 members: Black Dwarf, Super Giant, Corvus Glaive, Promixa Midnight, and Ebony Maw. According to the statues revealed at D23, we will see all of them with the exception of Super Giant. Similar to Gamora and Nebula, the Black Order is considered to be the Children of Thanos. These members shown will probably be Thanos’ more faithful children and will give the Avengers a reason to assemble once again. For the sake of this article, we’re going to cover the members of The Black Order that will be appearing in Avengers: Infinity War.
Black Dwarf is basically the Hulk of the Black Order in that he is a giant, indestructible powerhouse of muscle and rage. His powers consist of super strength, durability, and density. In the comics, he challenged Black Panther on T’challa’s home turf of Wakanda, only to be defeated and forced to retreat (which led to his expulsion from the Black Order altogether). He is also the brother of other Black Order member Corvus Glaive. When looking at his statue, one can’t help but get excited to imagine a Hulk/Black Dwarf fight play out on the silver screen. Interestingly enough, it seems that Black Dwarf will undergo a name change in Infinity War, and he will be called Cull Obsidian.
Corvus Glaive holds the position of Thanos’ right hand man. He gained this title for his prowess as a master tactician and his brilliant mind. Before attacking a planet, he observes every military strategy the planet’s forces have ever implemented, then plans his own attacks accordingly. He possesses super strength, durability, speed, and endurance. He also has the unique trait in that he is an immortal. However, his immortality is tied to the blade on his glaive, the weapon he possesses. In the comics, Corvus Glaive betrayed Thanos, prompting Thanos to easily destroy his Glaive. He then gave him a choice, die by Thanos’ hand or his own. Fearing Thanos and knowing what Thanos does to those who cross him, he opted to take his own life. His presence in Infinity War will be a welcome one. It’ll be a battle of tactics between the minds of Steve Rogers and the Mad Titan’s Right Hand.
Proxima Midnight is Thanos’ expert combatant. She was able to decimate the city of Atlantis and fight the Mighty Avengers single-handed during the events of the Infinity comic. Proxima Midnight was able to not only defeat Namor the Sub-Mariner, but also make him submit to the will of Thanos. She possesses super strength, endurance, agility, as well as extensive combat abilities. Her spear is also able to cut through virtually anything. When her blade meets its target, it is broken down to a molecular level. She is able to fight off most of the Avenger’s best fighters with her fighting skills and will no doubt bring the hurt to Earth’s Mightiest Heroes next summer.
Though most of Thanos’ Black Order consists of fighters, Ebony Maw breaks the mold. He is the thinker of the grouper and possesses what one might call super manipulation. During the events of Infinity, Ebony Maw was able to manipulate the mind of Doctor Strange, easily one of the strongest minds in Marvel comics. With his genius level intellect and powers of corrosion, don’t be surprised if Ebony Maw is able to turn a few Avengers on each other come 2018.
Overall, I’m incredibly excited to see The Black Order go toe-to-toe with The Avengers next year. We’ve seen The Avengers rally against an enemy, but they’ve never been faced with a true team before. The Black Order is the perfect foe to introduce as an Anti-Avengers, and I can’t wait to see them in action!
That’s it for our first “Who is” series! I hope you enjoyed it, and leave some suggestions below on who you would like us to cover next!
